Trento's main square and its Duomo
Trento (ca 100.000 inhabitants), placed in the Trentino-Alto
Adige Region (NW of Italy), is located on the flat Adige river valley on
the Verona-Brennero-Innsbruck-Munich motorway and railway.
The town has many houses painted with frescoes on the facades, giving to the city the name of "painted city".
Trento is surrounded by beautiful mountains (the southern part of the Alps and the UNESCO's Dolomites) and lakes.
Trento was a roman town (called "Tridentum") and after Goth, Lombard
and Carolingian rule it passed in year 1027 to the Germanic Empire. The
famous Council of Trento was held here from the year 1545 to year 1563
by the Catholic Church in an attempt to curb the rapid progress of
Martin Luther's Reformation.
