Trento's main square and its Duomo

Trento (ca 100.000 inhabitants) is the capital of the Trentino-Alto Adige (Südtirol) Region and is located on the flat Adige river valley on the Verona-Brennero-Innsbruck-Munich motorway and railway.
The town has many houses painted with frescoes that allow Trento to be called "la città dipinta" (the painted city).
Trento is surrounded by beautiful mountains (the southern part of the Alps and the Dolomites) and lakes.
Trento was a roman town (called "Tridentum") and after Goth, Lombard and Carolingian rule it passed in year 1027 to the Germanic Empire. The famous Council of Trento was held here from the year 1545 to year 1563 by the Catholic Church in an attempt to curb the rapid progress of Martin Luther's Reformation.
